Edexcel Level 2 BTEC First Award and Certificate in Sport (NQF)

Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Certificates and Extended Certificates in Sport (QCF)

The Edexcel BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Sport provides students with a high-quality vocational and applied curriculum that is broad and engaging for all learners. It provides learners with opportunities to link education, sport and the world of work in engaging, relevant and practical ways and it supports students development of transferable interpersonal skills, including working with others, problem-solving and independent study.

The First Award is a 120 guided-learning-hour qualification (equivalent in teaching time to one GCSE). 75 percent of the qualification is internally assessed and 25 per cent is externally assessed. Edexcel sets and marks these assessments. There are 2 core units and 2 optional units:

Core units:

1 Fitness for Sport and Exercise – Externally assessed – 30 guided learning hours

2 Practical Sports Performance – Internally assessed – 30 guided learning hours

Optional specialist units:

5 Training for Personal Fitness – Internally assessed – 30 guided learning hours

6 Leading Sports Activities – Internally assessed – 30 guided learning hours

The Edexcel BTEC First Award in Sport has been designed primarily for students who may wish to explore a vocational route throughout Key Stage 4, but it is also suitable for other learners who want a vocationally focused introduction to this area of study. It has been developed to:

  • encourage personal development through practical participation and performance in a range of sports and exercise activities
  • give learners a wider understanding and appreciation of health-related fitness, sports and exercise through a selection of optional specialist units
  • encourage learners to develop their people, communication, planning and team-working skills
  • give students the opportunity to progress to other vocational qualifications, such as the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Nationals in Sport or Sport and Exercise Sciences, or on to GCE AS or A level, and, in due course, to enter employment in the sport and active leisure sector
  • give learners the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.
